The Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System

The brain and central nervous system contain the CB1 receptors. Lungs, liver, and kidneys may also contain CB1 receptors.  The immune system’s proteins are responsible for the production of CB2 receptors. Our Endocannabinoid receptors are very intelligent.  The functions of these receptors are solely focused on bringing a balance to out-of-balance, abnormal bodily functions in order to maintain homeostasis at all times.

Overall, the Endocannabinoid System plays a crucial role in regulating a vast range of bodily processes, as shown in the picture above. These processes affect our everyday life, our mood, energy level, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, stress, hunger, metabolism, and much more.

So how does CBD play a role?

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System, or more specifically with one (or more) of its CB1 and CB2 receptors to exert its vast range of effects on the body.

Lipid molecules are a main component of the ECS (endocannabinoid).  The human body produces these molecules naturally.  Most experts believe that Cannabinoids (such as CBD) mimic endocannabinoids by attaching to the endocannabinoid receptors.  This not only increases their concentration in the body but also helps in combating diseases.

Other experts believe that CBD inhibits the breakdown of the body’s endocannabinoids.  This allows them to keep exerting their effects on the body.  To understand how it works and interacts with the body, we need more research.  Although the information thus far suggests that there are absolutely no harmful effects of CBD on the body. (Only positive ones!)
